Confirmation is one of the sacraments of initiation, along with Baptism and Eucharist. While baptism is our entry into the body of Christ and the family of God, confirmation is the sacrament of maturity and coming of age in our faith. It is in confirmation that we complete our baptismal promises. Confirmation is conferred by the anointing with Chrism oil and the laying on of hands by the Bishop. The Sacrament of Confirmation strengthens us with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. "The effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost" (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1302).
Students preparing for confirmation start in their 7th grade Faith Formation classes. Continuing their Religious Education classes in the 8th grade, each student prepares to receive this sacrament at the end of their 8th grade Faith Formation education year. Adults intersted in confirmation should refer to the Adult Confirmation portion of the RCIA program.
